At 45, I did something most people my age wouldn't dare — I walked onto a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu mat for the first time.
It humbled me fast.
Guys my same age and older were moving around like they were 25 and my body was locked up like a rusty gate. My hips were locked. My shoulders were a disaster. Decades of tightness I never knew existed.
So I got obsessed. Not just with BJJ. With mobility. With stretching. With unlocking every inch of range of motion my body had been hiding.
But it wasn't just me.
I'm a single father to four high level athletes. Miya is a D1 rower in college. Carson competes in varsity tennis. Hana rows competitively at a national level at just 15. And Connor — my youngest — is already on the mats with me training Jiu Jitsu.
Supporting my children to compete at that level taught me something — mobility isn't a luxury. It's the foundation. The athletes who move better, recover faster and stay injury free are the ones who last. Assisted stretching became a cornerstone of my entire family's performance.
